They were known as a people who lived “in the hill country” ( 11:3). They were among those to whom Jabin of Hazor sent for help in an attempt to rally sufficient strength to withstand Joshua ( 11:3). Other references, however, provide interesting details about the “Jebusites.” After Israel’s smashing victories W of the Jordan, the “Jebusites” became intensely concerned about stopping and turning back Israel led by Joshua ( Josh 9:1). The customary listing of peoples, including the “Jebusites,” is given a number of times in Joshua and Judges ( Josh 3:10 12:8 24:11 Judg 3:5). Jebusites not conquered by Israelites until David’s reign. It is in essentially the same grouping that the “Jebusites” are mentioned a number of times in other books of the Pentateuch as among the peoples whose land had been promised to Israel ( Exod 3:8 13:5 23:23 33:2 34:11 Num 13:29 Deut 7:1 20:17).Ģ. “Jebusites” are first mentioned in the Bible with Amorites, Girgashites, and others-as those peoples who could be described as “families of the Canaanites” ( Gen 10:16-18). Jebusites among peoples to be dispossessed by Israel. “Jebusites” remained in “Jebus” until David conquered the city, made it his capital, and restored its name to Jerusalem.ġ. During several centuries before the time of David it was known as the place of the “Jebusites,” hence as “Jebus.” It was a case of the “Jebusites” giving their place of abode their name, rather than the place giving its name to its people. However, “Jebus” displaced the name of Jerusalem in some circles ( Judg 19:10). Jerusalem as the established name for an important city goes far back into the history of the land of Canaan, as is known from mention of it in connection with early Biblical incidents and from the occurrence of Ur-salimmu, e.g., in the Amarna Letters.
